Why Do Some People Read Faster Than Others?
I’m a slow reader compared to some members of my book club. Why are we so different? Is it intelligence?

Cognitive processing (understanding what you read) doesn’t correlate with speed. In fact, beyond a normal range, faster reading always reduces comprehension. Slow readers more likely acquired habits during childhood that are hard to break. Foremost by far is “subvocalizing.” The more we read aloud in our heads, the slower we read. Another issue is unconsciously reading word by word instead of moving smoothly forward. Regardless, if you’re reading fast enough for your needs (work, school, etc.), speed is irrelevant. Faster reading is not better reading.
