  • Christina Aguilera revealed her thoughts on Adam Levine's exit from The Voice-and why she decided to leave the show herself.

  • She starred on the singing competition for six seasons.

When Adam Levine announced he would not return to The Voice for season 17, just about everyone was totally shocked-except for former coach Christina Aguilera, that is.

"I wasn't surprised," Christina said in an interview with Access Hollywood about the Maroon 5 frontman's decision to leave the singing competition. "I think there's always a time and a place, especially as an artist, you know, getting back into your creative mode and out of that kind of environment is important."

She added, "I actually gained some respect with that decision. It's good to follow your heart."

Christina, who appeared on the series for six seasons-and won once with contestant Alisan Porter-has been candid about her time on the show, and called the experience a "churning hamster wheel" in a 2018 interview with Billboard. "You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story," she said at the time. The artist also recently told People her family was one of the main reasons she decided to try out TV, but the gig "really wasn’t quite the fit" for her.

"I originally took the seat on The Voice because it kept me in a little bit of a more grounded position for my children," she said. "But after a certain amount of time, of course, the artist in me was like, 'I have to evolve!' I was just very afraid of going out on tour and the instability I felt it would maybe impose on my children."

She's certainly been busy since her time on The Voice: The 38-year-old just kicked off her Las Vegas residency Xperience, which continues through October. So will Adam follow in his former co-star's footsteps and start making new music? We have our fingers crossed!
