When you think about Rory Gilmore, she of beloved comfort show Gilmore Girls fame, you probably don’t think about her hair at first. Maybe you think about her Type A perfectionism, her romances with Jess, Dean and Logan, or her enviable collection of preppy sweaters. Her brunette hair often goes overlooked amidst the New England scenery of Stars Hollow, the seemingly endless cups of coffee, and the mile-a-minute dialogue between Rory and her mom Lorelai—but like the series itself, it’s worth a second (or third, or seventeenth) look.

“When I think of Rory Gilmore’s hair, the words that come to mind are ‘effortless elegance,’” says celebrity stylist Danielle Priano, who works with stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Shay Mitchell and Madelyn Cline. “Her hair, while seemingly simple, perfectly encapsulates her character’s blend of intelligence, youthfulness, and classic charm; it conveys a sense of approachability and sophistication.”

Given that Gilmore Girls is experiencing a resurgence—it is fall, after all, peak GG-rewatch season—it may be the perfect time to hone your blowout skills with the same dedicated precision that Rory dedicates to her studies. Below, get all the details behind the classic Rory Gilmore style, straight from the pros.

The Trend

For much of the series, Rory (as played by Alexis Bledel) wears her hair in simple styles that work well with her buttoned-up wardrobe. Bangs are about as adventurous as she gets, but that’s the charm of the character and her signature hairstyle. Her hair is most frequently styled straight with little volume and curled under at the ends; it’s a relatable look for a high school student —and beyond, as TikTok has also taken a liking to the look—and the very definition of a basic blowout.

“Her hair is polished, playful and clean,” says celebrity hairstylist and curly hair expert Sophie Rose Gutterman. It’s also a versatile base for accessorizing. “You can put a headband on and create a preppy look or change the part depending on your mood. Overall, it’s a classic blowout look that will never go out of style.”

How to Get the Look

On the surface, Rory’s style seems really easy: a straight, sleek blowout with very little bend or curl. But it’s a style that requires more work than you may think if you don’t have a similar texture to Bledel. “If you have straight hair, all you have to do is put a slight bend on the ends,” says Gutterman. (This can be done with a blowdryer, curling iron or flat iron, whatever you prefer.) “But if your hair is wavy, you will need to put a little more effort into round brushing the hair from roots to ends to get the look.”

“The key is to start with a good foundation, ensuring the hair is well-conditioned and detangled,” advises Priano, who preps wet hair with SexyHair Style Prep Me Primer ($20). “Using a medium to large round brush, you’ll direct the hair dryer downwards; this technique while blow-drying helps achieve that sleek, smooth look on top.” To get those curled-under, top-of-the-honor-roll ends, Priano recommends switching to a medium barrel brush as you blowdry. “It’s all about the wrist motion–twist the brush slightly as you reach the ends to achieve that signature flip.”

If you have some wave or curl to your hair, Gutterman likes All About Curls’ Luxe Leave-In ($11) and SexyHair’s Big Blowdry Volumizing Gel ($20) as a prep step. “Having a product that has memory in it is important so that the style will last all day. Once you’ve applied your products this style can be achieved with something as simple as a blowdry brush,” she explains. A blowdry brush will help you get the tension you need to smooth out your hair and make styling your ends easier.

Once your hair is fully dry and as perfect as Rory’s SAT scores, Priano recommends finishing with a light smoothing serum or cream to reduce frizz and add shine. (She likes SexyHair Love Oil, $25, and Gutterman is a fan of Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime Hydrating Hair Oil, $54.) Finish with a light-to-medium hold hairspray to lock in the look without sacrificing movement and you’re ready to hit up Luke’s Diner.
