Riverdale's Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have not publicly commented on reports that the two ended their relationship. But People is the first tabloid to really get insight into why the couple decided to call it on their relationship is roughly two years.

“Their friends didn’t really expect them to last in the long-run,” a source told the outlet. “At the end of the day, their personalities are very different and their lifestyles often clashed. Things have felt super heavy in the relationship for a while, and it got to be too much. They’re both very professional though and trying to be as amicable and friendly as possible."

People's report echoes E!'s earlier this week. When E! first reported the breakup news, a source explained to the outlet that the two broke up "earlier in the summer" and had been "intentionally keeping their distance from the other." (It was apparently a "very messy breakup," a source told the outlet.) But things were getting better between the two co-stars now that they were back at work on Riverdale. They are on "much better terms," its source said.

E!'s source didn't rule out the possibility of a reconciliation. "Right now, it's unclear where things stand, but it seems [like] they could be heading back in the direction of getting together," the source said.

Reinhart and Sprouse, for their part, have said in interviews that they prefer to keep their love lives private.

”I'm not okay talking about my relationship,” Reinhart told Harper's Bazaar last year. “I'm not going to tell you my love story. That's just not appropriate right now.”

Sprouse told ELLE.com the same thing in an April 2017 interview. "I am one of those guys that's never ever going to talk about my private life with the public sphere," he said. "I mean people can talk about the Jughead as much as they want but when it comes to the personal relationships, I have spent much of my life separating work and play so I will continue to do so."
