Why Lea Michele Is Out of 'Funny Girl' This Week

Lea Michele will be missing several performances of Funny Girl on Broadway this week, the show's official Instagram announced today, May 16.

After an ongoing health battle with her young son, the former Glee star is now facing one of her own: another Covid infection, causing her to miss performances through the rest of the week.

Currently, she's scheduled to return on Tuesday, May 23, with understudies Julie Benko and Ephie Aardema covering her role in the meantime.

Michele was previously out of the musical in September with the virus, writing on her Instagram story at the time, as captured by People, "Funny Girl has been and still is tackling a tremendous wave of COVID with close to a dozen company members currently out. We are almost on the other side of this and our swings and understudies are doing such an incredible job to keep our show on its feet."

Michele was in the show this past Sunday, sharing her Mother's Day bow with her two-year-old son Ever, whom she shares with her husband, Zandy Reich. Amid the applause for the cast, Michele ran over to the edge of the stage and plucked the boy—who was also holding a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers—out of the audience.

Michele is surely excited to return to the stage as soon as possible, as the show only has a few months left on Broadway. Originally contracted through June 2023, the frontwoman loved being a part of it so much that she extended her contract to stay on through the show's final performance on Sept. 3, 2023.
