Lady Gaga might not be touring or have a new album out, but that hasn't stopped her from being nominated at the 2023 Grammy Awards. No, it's not for 'Bloody Mary,' the 2011 album track that's been given a second life online thanks to TikTok and the Wednesday dance; it's for 'Hold My Hand', the power ballad that Gaga contributed to the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack, which plays over the film's final moments.
'Hold My Hand' is up for the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Visual Medium. It is Gaga's fourth nomination in this specific category; her first was in 2016 with ''Til It Happens to You' from the documentary The Hunting Ground. She went on to win in this category in 2019 for 'Shallow', the song she performed alongside Bradley Cooper in the trailer for the musical A Star Is Born, then again the following year for 'I'll Never Love Again' from the same movie.
Gaga has been nominated 35 times at the Grammys over the course of her career, and has won 13. She faces still competition in the Best Song for a Visual Medium category this year, and will be going up against 'Be Alive' by Beyoncé from biopic King Richard, 'Carolina' by Taylor Swift from literary adaptation Where the Crawdads Sing, Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell's fictional boyband banger 'Nobody Like U' from Turning Red, 'Keep Rising' by Jessy Wilson from The Woman King, and the ultimate earworm from the last year, 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' by Lin-Manuel Miranda from Disney's Encanto.
Why won't Lady Gaga be at the Grammy Awards?
Despite her nomination, and having previously been a mainstay at the awards show both as a guest and as a live performer, Gaga won't be present tonight to accept the Grammy for 'Hold My Hand' in the event that she wins. She is currently busy filming her new movie, Todd Phillips' supervillain/antihero sequel Joker: Folie á Deux, where she will be starring opposite Joaquin Phoenix.
Folie à Deux continues the story of Joaquin Phoenix's troubled clown character, and will introduce Gaga as Harley Quinn, the villainess famously played by Margot Robbie in a number of DC movies. The movie, tipped to be a musical, will follow their chaotic relationship (the title refers to a French idiom used to describe a "madness of two").
