If you're trying to make sense of why The Morning Show isn't nominated for any Emmys this year, fret not—the show wasn't shut out, and Hollywood has not forsaken Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. The nomination process often comes down to timing, at least in part, making many acclaimed and beloved series ineligible for Emmy submissions. Such was the case for The Morning Show this time around.
To explain further: This evening's Emmys, which are a postponed version of the 2023 Emmys, are honoring shows that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. The Morning Show's second season aired from Sept. 17 to Nov. 19, 2021, making it eligible for the previous 2022 Emmys, and its recent third season (which aired Sept. 13 to Nov. 8, 2023) won't be eligible until next time around.
In case you're wondering, the larger-than-usual gap between eligibility dates and the ceremony's air-date is the result of the dual writers' and actors' strikes that shut down Hollywood for a collective five months. The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were initially scheduled to take place on Sept. 18, 2023.
Other critically and commercially successful series that won't be nominated this year due to eligibility rules are Black Mirror Season 6 and Outlander. Likewise, you won't see any of the phenomenal guest actors from the star-studded second season of The Bear on the list this year, despite at least one of them being a sure thing (ahem, Jamie Lee Curtis), because it's the show's first season, not its second, that's up for awards tonight.
