Why Isn't Kate Middleton at Balmoral with the Rest of the Royal Family?

As the world is saddened by the news of Queen Elizabeth's death, the royal family is mourning the loss of their monarch. Today, the royals quickly traveled to Balmoral—with the exception of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Charles and Camilla—now King and Queen Consort—and Princess Anne were all already there when the Palace announced Queen Elizabeth's declining health this morning, and Prince Edward, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Prince Andrew, and Prince William were all spotted arriving earlier this afternoon. Prince Harry, too, is reportedly en route.

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of great sadness for me and all members of my family," King Charles III said in a statement. It continues: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt through the country, the Reals, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."

It is understood that Kate Middleton stayed back in Windsor because Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis had their first day of school today at Lambrook School in Berkshire. The Cambridges were pictured yesterday attending a "settling in afternoon" for new students and families. Kate, Prince William, and their children recently moved to Windsor, where they are now living in Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Castle estate.

Meghan Markle stayed behind in England, too, where she and Harry had traveled to for a series of events to support charities close to their hearts.
