Why You Should Ignore Every Design Rule, Plus More Highlights From #CreateGood 2018 Night 2
After an eventful first night of #CreateGood 2018, the second night on Tuesday, October 16, featured a stellar lineup of design masterminds and incredible performers with powerful messages.
The #CreateGood Art panel, which featured founder, Design*Sponge and Good Company Magazine Grace Bonney, founder of Modern Macramé Emily Katz, artist and designer Malene Barnett, poet and author Yrsa Daley-Ward, members of the Art Hoe Collective, Gabrielle Richardson, Anajah Hamilton, and Jheyda McGarrell, and obé fitness instructors The Rickey Sisters, was streamed live from New York City’s Build Studios at 7 pm ET. The ladies of Art Hoe Collective will inspire you to start creating.
Gabrielle Richardson, Anajah Hamilton, and Jheyda McGarrell may have been in diapers when the Harry Potter series debuted, but they can teach everyone a thing or two about starting a movement. They are creators of the Art Hoe Collective, an online art space for underrepresented creatives to showcase their work.
As for the using “hoe” in the name? “We decided to reclaim the term and use it as our own,” Richardson told Anjelika Temple, founding partner and CCO of Brit + Co. “We are liberated, young, queer, femme women, who want to see art where we can finally see ourselves — not as the muse, but as a creator.”
And the Bard of Instagram wants you to know that you can.
Yrsa Daley-Ward kicked off her panel with a reading of “when it is but it ain’t.” The model-turned-poet has published two books and amassed nearly 150,000 followers on Instagram, but she insists that similar success is not so far out of reach. “You’re always the sum of everything you’ve experienced. When you’re a model you’re the same person as you the writer,” Daley-Ward told Brit + Co founder and CEO Brit Morin. “The more you do, the richer you are.”
Forget the rules (and the jute rug).
Design*Sponge and Good Company Magazine Grace Bonney, founder of Modern Macramé Emily Katz, artist and designer Malene Barnett joined Anjelika Temple on stage for a frank chat about the rules of design in the age of social media — or the lack thereof. “The only thing we hate is rules and the idea that something is in and out,” Bonney said. “If it feels good to you, then to me that’s what design should be.” However, that doesn’t extend to jute rugs, a no-no in Barnett’s book. “I’m over them,” the founder of Malene B art and design atelier said. “Just add some color and pattern. Maybe a chevron?”
Then get movin’.
