Are you still dreaming about your next home renovation project? According to the home improvement pros at Thumbtack, the app that connects you to professional contractors, this winter is an optimal time to start those home improvement projects.

Their newest report discusses how homeowners stay put and invest in their current homes instead of searching for new ones. With mortgage rates still on the rise, more homeowners are looking to turn their current house into their dream home, especially before the holidays hit, as opposed to moving.

Along with this, the experts at Thumbtack have seen a few trending spots homeowners are most looking to refresh. These are some of the best places to start if your home could use some love.

Start in the Kitchen

The first room homeowners are looking to renovate this fall? The kitchen.

According to Thumbtack, natural minimalism is still on the rise. Wood cabinets and organic stone countertops are this year’s classic, simple design pairing.

Most renovators aren’t just looking for a style upgrade, though—new cabinet installations are popular right now, as homeowners look for ways to add more storage space to their homes.

Don't Overlook Closets and Garages

Once those new kitchen cabinets are filled, renovations turn to closets and garages for additional storage solutions.

Closet remodels are up more than 50%, with built-in shelving being one of the top renovation choices. Garage additions and garage remodels are the best way to add the most extra storage space to a home (especially handy for the holidays).

Give Your Bathroom a Makeover

Bathrooms are another major renovation focus this year. Other than upgrading faucets and fixtures, over 50% of Thumbtack’s bathroom renovations come from homeowners looking for a bathroom design upgrade.

Dark-toned bathrooms are trending this year, and it’s no wonder they’re one of the most popular renovation projects. With the primary aspect of the trend being a repaint (or, in some cases, a retiling), moody bathrooms are a cost-effective way to give your space a new look.

The report also found that homeowners are bringing luxury spa fixtures to their bathrooms to create their dream space. Soaking tubs and heated floors are some popular additions as colder weather approaches.

Embrace Your Exterior

Thumbtack’s report covers more than just full-room remodels. Roof repair and inspections are a classic item on the fall to-do list for many homeowners, with other popular outdoor projects including lawn care and tree trimming, pest control, and exterior painting.

Repair project requests have also increased this year, with most focuses being on appliances and electrical.

Declutter and Reset

Although fall is the right time to clear out your yard and prepare your garden for winter, most of the holiday season won’t be spent outside. For indoor projects that don’t include room renovations, homeowners are looking to hire house cleaning and junk removal services—just in time for holiday gatherings.

New floors, carpet cleanings, and furniture installations (including light fixtures and TVs) also make the list of the most booked home projects this fall.

The report also covers smart home installations, with more homeowners turning to smart devices such as thermostats and cameras to keep their homes comfortable and safe.

If you’re looking to get started on home renovations before the holiday season arrives, the Thumbtack app can help you create a home maintenance guide that will kickstart your home projects this season.
