Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood's longest-lasting couples, having been together for 40 years. But surprisingly, they've not married.

Hawn was recently interviewed by CNN's Chris Wallace, who asked point-blank, "Why aren't the two of you married?" The First Wives Club star retaliated with a question of her own, asking "Why should we get married?"

Wallace stood by his question, and the 77-year-old pointed out that their decision was based on having been married to other people before, "and when it doesn't work out, it ends up to be big business."

She continued, "Somebody has to own something. It's always ugly. Somebody has to actually take a look and say…how many divorces are fun? How many divorces actually don't cost money? How many divorces make you even hate the person more than you did before?"

Wallace pointed out that the couple has been together four decades, so they're "not going to get divorced."

Hawn pushed back, asking, "Well, how do you know that then?"

He admitted in defeat: "I suppose that's a good question."

The actress then noted that she enjoys making the choice every day of whether she wants to be in her partnership, because "relationships are hard."

She contined, "They're not always easy. There's all kinds of hurdles that we go through, there's things that we believe in, and things that we don't believe in, agree on."

The main reason for not choosing marriage, according to Hawn, is because "staying independent, with independent thinking, is important so you can hold on to yourself and you can actually have that feeling."

Hawn was married to West Side Story actor Gus Trikonis from 1969 until 1973. She then married The Hudson Brothers' Bill Hudson—who is daughter Kate Hudson's dad— three years later, divorcing in 1982. She began dating her Overboard co-star on Valentine's Day 1983, after meeting years earlier on the set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1968.
