Zayn Malik and his girlfriend Gigi Hadid won’t be at Los Angeles’ Grammy ceremony tonight, and it’s not just because the couple is East Coast-based with a new baby in the midst of a pandemic. Malik wasn’t nominated for any awards—but that omission wasn’t a snub. His new album Nobody Is Listening was not eligible for this year’s ceremony, as it was released after the September 1, 2019 t0 August 31, 2020 window.

Will Malik be at next year's ceremony? His three tweets this week suggest he’ll likely boycott it until the Recording Academy really changes its nomination process. He called out the lack of inclusivity at the ceremony throughout the week.

Malik first tweeted, “Fuck the grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary.” He clarified in a second tweet a day later, “My tweet was not personal or about eligibility but was about the need for inclusion and the lack of transparency of the nomination process and the space that creates and allows favoritism, racism, and netwokring [sic] politics to influence the voting process.”

And he added shortly before the ceremony started on Sunday, “.@recordingacad are moving in inches and we need to move in miles. I’m keeping the pressure on & fighting for transparency & inclusion. We need to make sure we are honoring and celebrating ‘creative excellence’ of ALL. End the secret committees. Until then ... #fuckthegrammys.”
