Why Fans Are Hopeful for 'All The Light We Cannot See' Season 2

While we all love a good binge watch, there are times when you want to just dedicate a couple of hours to a show, and Netflix has plenty of miniseries and limited series that fit that role. The newest miniseries from Netflix is called All The Light We Cannot See, and it’s directed by Shawn Levy, who also produced and directed a little show called Stranger Things, as well as films like Just Married, the Night at the Museum trilogy, and will be behind the forthcoming Deadpool 3.

Based on the 2014 Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, All the Light We Cannot See follows two teenagers during World War II: Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl, and Werner Pfennig, a German boy forced to fight for the Nazis. The series stars newcomer Aria Mia Loberti as Marie-Laure and Louis Hofmann as Werner, along with Lars Eidinger, Hugh Laurie, Mark Ruffalo, and Marion Bailey in supporting roles.

All the Light We Cannot See premiered its four episodes at once, and although it was billed as a limited series, fans are wondering if there might be an additional season made by Netflix, as it has happened before. Here's what we know about the chances for it All the Light We Cannot See Season 2.

Will there be an All The Light We Cannot See season 2?

As of right now, Netflix has not announced any plans for a second season of All The Light We Cannot See. The show is a miniseries, and the plot lines were all wrapped up by the finale—no cliffhangers or unresolved storylines here. With that being said, the show had a completely different ending than the book.

In the show, Marie-Laure kills Reinhold von Rumpel, but in the book, it’s Werner that kills him to protect Marie-Laure. The series then ends with Marie-Laure and Werner going their separate ways, and Marie-Laure throws the Sea of Flames into the ocean to return the prized gem to the sea. However, the book actually ends in the present day, and it details Werner’s illness and death in a minefield shortly after parting ways with Marie-Laure. The book then shows what happens 30 years later when Werner’s sister Jutta meets with Marie-Laure, as well as a brief scene set in 2014 when Marie-Laure is 86 and still living in Paris.

This departure from the novel’s ending has made fans speculate that there might be a second season to showcase what happens to the characters. Series director Shawn Levy said he changed the ending to add some “hope” to the show.

“Though it is far from a happy ending, I wanted to end with a promise of hope, and there were some bleak, deeply upsetting scenes late in the book that we didn't include in the show,” Levy told Entertainment Weekly. "But, again, Anthony has turned out to be so happy with the show that he has agreed with that decision. So, things that might've made sense to the novelist a decade ago when he was working on this, might not make sense on screen, on Netflix, for a global, mainstream audience in 2023.”
