Why Denise Richards Doesn’t Want Her Daughter to Get Plastic Surgery at 19

Denise Richards has been open about her plastic surgery experiences for years, including her regrets about getting breast implants at age 19. Now, she’s discouraging her daughter, Sami Sheen, from doing the same.
In a Bustle interview released Tuesday, Sheen — the daughter of Richards and ex-husband Charlie Sheen — explained that she’s wanted “D cup breast implants” since the beginning of puberty. “I was 10 years old and like, ‘I can’t wait to have big boobs like my mom,’” she remembered. “All my friends were getting boobs, and I was just like, ‘OK, when’s it my turn?’ I would always stuff my bra with socks and stuff.”

Richards, 52, remembered experiencing something similar when she was growing up. “I was made fun of as a teenager [because my boobs] were mosquito bites,” she told the outlet. “I got them done at the same age Sami is wanting to get them done.”
Now, Bustle reported, Richards wants to get her implants removed. “I didn’t know how toxic [they are] when I was 19,” she says, which is why she wants Sheen to reconsider. “[I]t’s not an easy surgery,” Richards added. “It’s painful!”

Richards talked to Us Weekly in 2011 about the issues she experienced with her implants, which began right after she got them. “A doctor put in bigger implants than what I asked for,” she said at the time. “I was in such a hurry to get them that I didn’t research my doctor. I just thought because they’re a plastic surgeon, they must be good. You have to be your advocate for your own body and ask 100 questions.”
She sought to get the surgery corrected, but a new doctor gave her larger implants. Richards remembered feeling “very vulnerable” at the time. “I was getting ready to film [1998’s] Wild Things, and I didn’t want to get into a lawsuit with some plastic surgeon. It wasn’t right what the doctor did, but it is what it is.”
By 2011, the actress said she was happy with the implants, “but in a year that could change.” She continued, “This is the size I wanted them to look at 19! There’s a long investment with breast implants. They’re not going to last a lifetime and things can go wrong.”
Fast forward to 2023 and, with her daughter is facing the same decision, Richards wants to make sure Sheen thinks it through. In a September TikTok, though, Sheen noted that getting a boob job could actually have an indirectly beneficial effect on her health. “I think me getting my boobs done is honestly going to save my life because it’s forcing me to quit [vaping],” the OnlyFans model said in the video, in which she sought advice from others on how to kick the habit. “I’m getting a boob job in two months, and I have to be nicotine-free for a month before,” Sheen continued. “I’m already getting anxiety. I have not gone a single day in the past five years without [vaping].”
Breast implants can provide a boost of confidence and self-esteem for those that get it, but according to Mayo Clinic, they can also come with some risks, including scar tissue that distorts the implant, breast pain, infection, changes in nipple and breast sensation, and implant leakage or rupture. Some people also experience breast implant illness, which can come with symptoms like fatigue, memory loss, rashes, joint pain, and more.
With those risks, it makes sense that Sheen is taking a beat — and quitting vaping, and getting her mom’s advice — before the surgery.
