Why You Need a Coffee Mug Hanger in Your Closet (It’s Ingenious Organizing!)

I dream of having a closet that has a built-in slot for all of my clothes, shoes, and accessories. I long to splurge on a custom build, with cubbies, hooks, and every other bell or whistle I can painstakingly select to ensure the space never becomes a black hole of haphazardly tossed garments and bags ever again.

But that dream is not my current reality. I live in an old, rented apartment with a very bare-bones bedroom closet. It boasts a couple of open shelves for stacking clothes, a closet rod for hangers, and not much else at all that inspires consistent organization. That’s why I love stumbling across an easy hack that will allow me to work within this space, inching a smidge closer to my organizational goals. That’s exactly what this video from professional organizer Holly Blakey presents.

In a stroke of genius, Blakey hooks a coffee mug hanger onto a shelf in her closet and uses it as a spot to hang all of her handbags. It keeps the bags in a compact area, but still allows her to see what she has and easily access even the items in the back. As she notes in the video, it doesn’t have to be purses that take up this space — belts, dog leashes, scarves, or even things like sunglasses and keys could be looped through the hanger just as easily as the handle of a ceramic mug.

The best part? If you’re a renter and it’s time to move out, all you have to do is slide the hanger right off the shelf and put it to use at your next destination. You don’t have to spend a pretty penny to achieve this either — I see about a billion mug hangers like this when I hit my local thrift stores, and you can get a three-pack on Amazon for just $10.
