For once, when Chris Harrison claimed this season of The Bachelorette would be the most dramatic ever, he was actually right. Luke P. ran wild, multiple rose ceremonies were unceremoniously canceled, and the whole time frontrunner Jed Wyatt was ghosting a girl back home. But maybe the most surprising piece of BTS drama came from Peter Weber’s ex, Calee Lutes, who claimed he broke up with her to go on the dating show.

So why did Chris Harrison, who had no problem grilling Jed Wyatt on his transgressions in front of millions, leave the drama with his mama during Pilot Pete’s live post-Bachelorette interview?

He was definitely planning to ask Pete everything! Before the finale, Chris Harrison told Entertainment Tonight that Peter would have “a little explaining to do.” Chris had done some digging and wanted to let Peter to tell his side of the story. But then...nothing. Turns out, there’s a reason for that.

In an interview with ET after the finale, ABC exec Rob Mills cleared everything up. “It sort of took away from this is a guy who still has some serious feelings for Hannah and wanted to talk about that and get that closure,” Rob said.

Basically, ABC was confident that the humble Delta Airlines pilot—who had sex with Hannah Brown not twice but four times in a windmill during Fantasy Suite week—was on the up and up.

“He was really above board and said, ‘Yeah, this is the story. It’s true in the fact that we absolutely were dating and it was serious. And I asked her to come out and move out here, and she didn’t want to,’” Rob told ET. “He ended this relationship. ‘We’ll see what happens. I’m gonna go on Bachelorette and maybe we can discuss things.’ This was over in his mind,” he explained.

“He had applied for the show well before he was dating this girl. He was a guy who really sort of loved the show and wanted to apply. I think it was probably a year and a half ago he had applied, and he was in the database and we had reached out to him. The place was right. He was newly single, but he was single. So, it didn’t seem like there was really that much to talk about,” Mills continued. “I’m glad that now the show’s over and he’s able to talk about it out in the press.”

That he did. “The show had absolutely nothing to do with me ending that relationship.” Pilot Pete told People earlier this week. “I was very serious in trying to progress that relationship and move it forward. And she wasn’t on the same page as me. That being said, I wasn’t going to waste her time or my time.”

He apologized anyway though. “It’s obvious that I hurt someone that I really did care about,” he says. “That was never my intention. And for that I’m sorry. Breakups suck!”

And that’s that on that.
