Why ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Isn’t Coming Back for Season 5

After waiting almost a year for new episodes, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 4 finally drops on Netflix on December 31, hopefully answering so many of the questions we’ve had since season 3 was released in January 2019. The pagans have been defeated, Sabrina’s found a way to be in two places at once, and still, the fate of the world hangs in the balance…so how is it all going to end? As a fan from the beginning, all the suspense has been killing me.

If you’re planning to speed through all the episodes as per usual, let me warn you: You might want to think about making these last. Unlike in seasons past, we don’t have new episodes to look forward in the future. In case you haven’t heard the news, let me be the one to break it to you: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 5 isn’t going to happen, witches. Season 4 is it.

Yeah. Why isn’t Sabrina’s story going to continue on? That’s a question for Netflix, which canceled the series in July 2020. Although the actual reason behind the cancellation hasn’t been revealed, it definitely seems like it wasn’t something the showrunner, Roberto Aguirrre-Sacasa, was expecting. At the time of the announcement, he told the Hollywood Reporter that working on Sabrina was “an incredible honor from day one.”

And as for how Sabrina Spellman herself feels about all this? In an interview with Inverse in December, Kiernan Shipka shared that she felt “satisfied” with the way everything came to a close, as much as she didn’t want her time working on the show to end.

“You get close to these characters, and when I talk about Sabrina, I’m not talking about myself playing her, I’m talking about her,” she said. “They become friends, confidants, and vehicles in which you express your emotions. To let go of that is hard, but it’s also beautiful. I was forever grateful that I had Sabrina during two very big years of my life. She got me through.”

It’s always really hard to say goodbye to a beloved show, especially one that seems to have so many stories left to tell. But fortunately, we can rewatch CAOS whenever we want, as long as Netflix is still a thing.

And who knows? Maybe there will be a reboot someday…and at least we still have Riverdale.
