Mattresses are a real life stage indicator. When I was in college, I had a free hand-me-down full-size (brand unknown, awful mattress). Then, I moved in with my girlfriend and we started using her full-size mattress (Tempur-Pedic, pretty good mattress). Now that we've both locked down a solid nine-to-five, it felt like it was time to upgrade. Enter The Casper, the new namesake mattress from one of our absolute favorite mattress brands.

The first thing I noticed upon arrival was the actual, physical box the mattress came in. It was about half the size I was expecting it to be, and I was able to carry it up the stairs to my apartment solo without a problem. Open the box, let it out of it's little vacuum sealed bag, and leave it to inflate for 30 minutes. After that, you've got a brand new mattress. That easy.

But for the substance of this review, I almost struggled to think of how I'd describe The Casper. The whole sleeping experience has just been so natural and easy. And I guess that's what it should be right?! Average is too harsh a word, because it's a great mattress. Sure, it's not the best mattress I've ever slept on, but that experience is reserved for five-star hotel mattresses that are currently out of my budget. But this is a great budget mattress.

It is a real straight-down-the-middle choice. The medium-firm is not too hard, not too soft. It works for me, who prefers something firm, and it works for my girlfriend, who tends to lean towards plush models. The only fault I could find sleeping on it is that sometimes I run a bit hot. But we can also file this away under personal problems, because I am a notoriously hot sleeper. The Casper though, is infinitely cooler than the mattress I had prior, but I still find myself having to stick a leg out most nights. I fear anything short of Casper's Snow (a new cooling model) is going to feel hot to me.

Where The Casper really stands out is in the value of it. For around $1,200 (actually on sale at $1,000 right now), this is an incredible value. It's a great forray into the world of luxury mattresses for anyone looking to dump an old model they bought at Costco. Mattress prices can get pretty absurd, and as mattress experts we know this. But for something marginally more expensive than other budget mattresses, and way cheaper than luxury mattresses, you're going to have a tough time finding something to beat this. And second to the value is the ease of receiving and moving it. Like I said, the whole experience was seamless. And it's light enough for me to move around the house on my own, which as a 20-something who's almost certainly going to have to find another apartment in 12 months, that maneuverability is going to be a big help.

So who is The Casper really for? Well first, people like me. The city-dwelling 20- and 30-somethings getting those first stable paychecks and looking to feel like an adult. But it's also a great choice for those 40- and 50-somethings looking for a guest bed that people will call back about after their stay, or a kid's bed upgrade. And really, it's a great mattress for anyone concerned about value—for the price there's nothing better. It's easy to get, easy to move, and most importantly, easy to sleep on.
