Why Blake Lively Skipped the 2023 Met Gala

Blake Lively won't be walking the Met Gala carpet tonight, but she "will be watching" from the comfort of her home. The actress joked to People last week that she plans on wearing her 2022 Met Gala ensemble on her couch. Just two months ago, Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds welcomed their fourth child, who joins older siblings Betty, 3, Inez, 6, and James, 8.

Lively has been a regular on the Met Gala carpet since 2008. Last year, Lively and Ryneolds served as co-chairs for the event. She wore a Versace gown that was a tribute to New York City's Empire State Building:

Her 2022 Met Gala dress is now on display at Kensington Palace, in an exhibit called "Crown to Couture." The curator, Polly Putnam, told T&C, "The red carpet is about winning and going to court is about winning, so we set up these parallels. The idea of the red carpet is probably a lot more familiar to people…yet this quite niche period of history has parallels with something that’s quite ubiquitous."

In 2017 and 2018, Lively also wore Versace to the Met Gala, wow'ing in the statement gowns and making numerous Best Dressed lists of the evening:

Her early Met Gala years included dresses by Ralph Lauren (2008), Marchesa (2010), and Gucci (2013, 2014). This year's theme celebrates the work of Karl Lagerfeld, and in 2011, Lively actually attended with Lagerfeld himself, wearing a Chanel Haute Couture gown.

Lively will definitely be missed on the red carpet!
