Why Beyoncé and Jay-Z Skipped the 2019 Grammys
Beyoncé and Jay-Z chose not to grace the Grammys with their presence tonight-but it wasn't because they weren't in town or didn't win an award. The Carters won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Everything Is Love. And they were nominated for Best Music Video for their single "Apeshit."
Why they skipped the award show might be due to when their Grammy win was announced: The award they won was revealed during the Grammys pre-show. Neither Beyoncé nor Jay-Z were performing during the actual show either, so there was no need for them to attend the ceremony if they didn't want to. And this year, it seemed that was the case.
The two were in Los Angeles this weekend, though. Bey and Jay-Z made headlines for their style at the Roc Nation pre-Grammys brunch yesterday. The couple coordinated in pastels there, with Jay-Z selecting a light blue suit and Bey opting for an asymmetrical pastel print mini dress by Balmain. The architectural statement sleeves of Beyoncé's dress were a highlight:
Bey and Jay-Z attended the Grammys last year with Blue, but Bey did not walk the red carpet. She arrived during Bruno Mars and Cardi B's performance of "Finesse," taking her seat in the front row next to Blue. For that ceremony, Beyoncé wore a black velvet custom Nicolas Jebran dress, and accessorized with Alain Mikli sunglasses, a giant saucer hat, and drop Lorraine Schwartz earrings.
Blue wore a tuxedo pantsuit created by Valery Kovalska, a clutch by Judith Leiber, and silver Mary Jane shoes from So Danca detailed with Swarovski crystals by Western Costume Co.
Beyoncé has been relatively active on Instagram in the weeks leading up to tonight's ceremony. The singer shared several of her signature outfit of the day photos-reminders that Bey will always deliver true statement fashion, even if it's not at award ceremonies.
