It probably comes as no surprise to fans that Beyoncé was nowhere to be seen at the MTV Video Music Awards tonight.

The megastar's explosive single, "Break My Soul," was in the running for Song of the Summer at the 2022 VMAs. Despite the nod, she opted to forgo tonight's festivities.

Per TMZ, the pop star is vacationing in Croatia with her family. The outlet even captured photos of her and husband Jay-Z relaxing on a yacht last week.

The last time Beyoncé attended the VMAs was in 2016, when she swept the night with 11 nominations and eight wins in total. Since, she has earned nominations in 2018, 2020, and 2021, though she was absent at all three subsequent ceremonies.

In recent years, Bey has been increasingly selective when it comes to her attendance at typically major Hollywood functions. She and Jay-Z have even been known to opt out of red carpet walks and, instead, quietly enter awards ceremonies with little to no fanfare.

Whatever the case, Beyoncé has been busy in recent months while preparing for the drop of her seventh studio album, Renaissance.

She previously teased the album's title in an interview for Harper's BAZAAR's September 2021 cover story.

"With all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again. I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible," she told BAZAAR. "I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare. One chorus can have up to 200 stacked harmonies. Still, there’s nothing like the amount of love, passion, and healing that I feel in the recording studio. After 31 years, it feels just as exciting as it did when I was nine years old. Yes, the music is coming!"
