Why Adriano Goldschmied Uses Soko’s Technologies for Daily Blue

“The Godfather of Denim” Adriano Goldschmied will host a workshop at Soko’s innovation hub in Florence on Thursday.

The goal of the event is to highlight the ways Goldschmied utilizes the chemical company’s sustainable products, Stardust and Lumia, for Daily Blue, his resurrected brand from the ’70s. After performing “intense tests and making comparisons with [other] washing methods,” he decided to use Stardust and Lumia for all of the brand’s denim products.

The partnership is far from just performative, however.

According to Luca Braschi, Soko’s consultant and sustainable denim finishing expert, Goldschmied won’t vouch for a product or technology if he’s not fully convinced about it. He said Soko and Daily Blue share the same vision to make denim processes more sustainable.

Stardust is an ozone solution that simplifies the washing process while drastically reducing water consumption and eliminating hazard chemicals. It can achieve a full process—from raw to vintage looks—with just one product, while conventional processes require several baths, pumice stones and chemicals to get same result.

Braschi said Stardust is a step toward low-impact denim processing and enables brands to achieve a “premium aesthetic while doing a very basic wash.”

With Lumia, Soko offers brands a single ozone-activated product that can fade indigo denim, black Sulphur denim and dyed garments without using hazard chemicals like potassium permanganate or hypochlorite bleach. The waterless technology is applied to garments before ozone processing.

Braschi pointed to “a lack of new ideas in denim finishing” in recent years. When Soko launched Stardust earlier this year and Lumia in 2021, the industry welcomed both as true innovations, not as copies or substitutes for something already in existence. He said manufacturers and brands like Daily Blue are enthusiastically embracing the technologies’ potential.

Part of Lumia and Stardust’s appeal, Goldschmied said, is how they produce garments “that have a very nice contrast between the indigo warp and weft” that looks natural and authentic.

“But what is even more important for us, is that the process is very simple, avoiding complex steps that we normally do to wash a jean. We [can] save a lot of water, energy, stones and avoid toxic chemicals, just by using the technology that is available today like ozone and laser,” he said.

Goldschmied added that adopting the technologies was a natural decision that aligns with the general strategy of Daily Blue: to use innovation and new technologies to make “the next denim fashion.”

The market is responding positively to the brand’s mission.

“There is a lot of interest,” Goldschmied said. “We may be a small brand for now, but we have a reputation for constant innovation in design, fabrics, and technologies. We aim to make products that are sustainable and circular so we can lower our direct impact on the environment. We know that the industry has eyes on us, and I personally feel this responsibility to make it our initiative. Our mission is to inspire the denim industry and open new doors to possibilities for everyone.”
