Adele was nowhere to be seen at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The the superstar was up for three awards tonight: Song of the Year for "Easy on Me," Album of the Year for 30, and Best Art Direction for her "Oh My God" music video. Despite the recognitions, she opted to skip tonight's festivities.

Her absence may come as no surprise to her fans. The first and last time that Adele attended the VMAs was in 2011, when she won three awards for "Rolling in the Deep," the powerhouse lead single off of her second studio album, 21.

Since, Adele has garnered additional nominations in 2012 and 2016, though she skipped the ceremonies for both years.

Adele has also long been known as one of Hollywood's most private stars, which may also explain her absence at tonight's ceremony.

In spite of her desire to keep her personal life outside of the public spotlight, the Grammy winner recently opened up in an interview with BBC about how her relationship with boyfriend Rich Paul has helped her come out of her shell.

"I think now that the relationship that I'm in, he's like, 'If you want to go to that restaurant, you should go and try the food at that restaurant, and if you want to go to this birthday party, then you should be going. You can't miss out on these things, what's the worst that could happen?'" she said, per Entertainment Tonight.
