This Is Why "13 Reasons Why" Fans Are Wearing Blue Nail Polish on Social Media

Last week, 13 Reasons Why executive producer Selena Gomez showed up at the Netflix series premiere in a gorgeous orange gown, complete with matching accessories and a soft touch of apricot blush. (She and the cast have since debuted matching tats, too.) What really stood out, though, was the singer's cobalt blue nail lacquer, especially juxtaposed against the shimmering shade. But as Selena and her nail artist Tom Bachik revealed, there was a deeper meaning to the manicure — one specifically related to 13 Reasons Why and the story behind it.

Throughout the series, the protagonist Clay Jensen tries to find out why his classmate Hannah Baker committed suicide. In the novel that precedes the series, the clues revealed to Clay throughout appear as cassette tapes labeled with blue nail polish, which Hannah wore on the last day of her life. When Selena also wore blue polish on the red carpet, it became a subtle, beautiful tribute that social media quickly picked up on.

Now, fans have taken to the cobalt-blue polish trend (which, if you were to copy Selena's exact shade, is Sinful Colors Endless Blue) in support of the moving story of Hannah. Take a look at some of the best blue looks that'll inspire you to watch the series and raise awareness for an important cause.
