Who's open: Where to get your first (or next) ice cream cone this season

Warm weather has once again awakened one of Somerset County's favorite outdoor activities: A trip to the local ice cream shop.

Whether you prefer a cone, dish, shake or sundae, many of the county's seasonal ice cream stands have already opened, are opening this week, or are getting ready to open soon.

The Daily American has put together a listing of the area's ice cream shops and their opening dates, based on information we have gathered. As more locations announce their opening dates and hours of operation, we will add them to the online list. Check in often for an update on your favorite local shop!

The first seasonal ice cream shop to open in Somerset County in 2024 was The Rambler, which opened on April 6 at 1203 Jefferson Ave. in Windber. The Rambler is open from 3-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A drive-through line is also available.

New for this year at The Rambler is that they are serving several food items: a King Soft Pretzel, all-beef hot dogs, nachos with cheese and a variety of chips, according to a post on its Facebook page. Credit cards will also be accepted for payment this year. The selection of flavors changes weekly, so be sure to check The Rambler's Facebook page regularly for updates.

The Pit Stop Kremery, 346 Main Street, Meyersdale, opened for the season on April 14. Its hours are from 3-9 p.m. daily, seven days per week. Look for some new items this year on the menu, according to its Facebook page.

The Silver Bell, 1575 Tire Hill Road in Davidsville, opened for the season on April 15. Its hours of operation are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Special flavors and other information is posted on its Facebook page.

Shaffer's Frosty Freeze, 134 Frosty Lane in Johnstown (route 985, the Old Somerset Pike), opened for the season on April 17. The order window is open from 1-9 p.m., seven days a week. For more information on flavors and other specials, visit its Facebook page or call 814-288-1870.

Outflow Soft Freeze, 1523 Mae West Road, Confluence, opened for the season on April 19. The shop is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. More information is available at their Facebook page.

Molly's Ice Cream, 1548 N. Center Ave., Somerset. Opens for the season on April 28, spring hours are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. See their Facebook page for updated information. Jake's Mini Golf opens Sunday as well, following the same hours except the cashier's window for golfing closes at 7 p.m. daily.

My Girls Deli and Catering, 542 Berlin Plank Road, Somerset. 814-444-6913. Ice cream area opens Friday, May 3, with Somerset County Dairy Princess Carlie Knott to attend.
