Whoa! A LOT of people use Spotify

When we think of music, Apple and iTunes come to mind. But there’s another streaming service that a lot of people use, and it’s celebrating a big milestone: Spotify just hit the 100 million-user mark.

Once upon a time, when we relied on Pandora for free music streaming, Spotify came along and totally changed the game. You could play practically any song, any time, for free! Over time, Spotify has recruited more than 30 million users to pay for the service, which promises ad-free listening even whether you have an internet connection or not. Through the years, it’s established itself as one of the biggest players in the game.

This is huge for the company, especially as more and more competitive music options pop up. Spotify is going up against some major companies, like Apple and Google. Plus, Amazon is reported to be working on a music service too. You might think that the launch of Apple Music would have slowed down Spotify’s growth, but actually, the opposite is true.

“Far from putting a dampener on Spotify’s growth, Apple Music seems to have accelerated it, if anything,” Jan Dawson, a tech analyst at Jackdaw Research, wrote in a recent blog post. “More likely, the streaming music industry has simply reached a tipping point, and both the Apple Music launch and Spotify’s success in 2015 are symptoms of that common cause.”

Congrats, Spotify! There are a lot of ways to listen to music these days, but we’ll always be loyal to your party playlists.
