From Town & Country

In 1967, Neil G. Bluhm, founder and current president of JMB Realty Corporation, was a partner at a law firm with zero net worth. Just four years ago, that same lawyer turned real-estate mogul donated $25 million to Northwestern University's School of Law, a record endowment for his alma mater.

On May 23, the Whitney Museum will honor the philanthropist and avid art collector at its annual spring gala, a fundraising event that benefits American artists. In advance of his recognition, T&C sat down with Bluhm, an endearingly modest 79-year-old, to learn about his trajectory to philanthropy titan and his role in expanding the Whitney.

"I grew up very poor, " explained Bluhm. "I haven't forgotten where I came from, and that's affected me in the sense that I've had a lot of drive to succeed, but I also haven't forgotten those who are less fortunate. So I'm very supportive of improving their lives and education.”

Since he was elected to the Whitney Museum's board 14 years ago, Bluhm has been an integral member, serving in various roles as Vice Chairman, President, and Co-Chairman. Naturally instrumental in choosing the museum’s downtown location in 2008, Bluhm said it was challenging to rally support for the Meatpacking District.

“We made a deal for the land before the great recession of 2008, and everyone was nervous,” he said. “But I felt the pulse of the city, with all the young people moving toward downtown.”

The same intuitions have steered him to become one of the most prominent realtors in the country - he owns several Chicago skyscrapers and multiple casinos. Bluhm also sits on several other boards including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Northwestern Memorial Foundation of Northwestern Hospital. Confident yet down-to-earth, the philanthropist emphasized his support for better education and for those less fortunate, something he says he constantly preaches to his grandchildren.

The Whitney Gala and Studio Party is May 23, and will highlight all 63 Biennial artists.
