This past year gave us a number of great buzz-worthy, meme-able shows. And one of the series that got people really talking was HBO Max’s original limited series The White Lotus. The six-episode satirical comedy-drama is a social commentary on white privilege, and what better setting for that than a tropical resort?

It follows the guests—as well as the employees—of the White Lotus resort as they encounter some snags and deal with messy relationships during what is supposed to be a luxurious and relaxing Hawaiian island getaway. Everything starts off like a typical vacation, with some minor inconveniences, but it all unravels and ends in someone’s death. The first season was so well received that it earned 20 Emmy nominations, including, like, almost every member of the cast in the acting categories, and it won 10 of them!

Of course, with the way things ended, it’s hard to see how another season might keep the story going without ruining the show. So a lot of viewers were wondering if it would even get renewed for a second season.

Here’s everything we know about The White Lotus season 2 so far.

Yes, there’s going to be a second season.

HBO officially renewed The White Lotus, and the show’s creator, Mike White, will be releasing a second installment to the series. In fact, they announced it just before airing last season’s finale.

Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said in a statement, “Mike has once again delivered a quintessential HBO show, and it’s the talk of the town. We were thrilled to hear where he wanted to go next after closing this epic chapter in Hawaii and can’t wait to keep following him wherever he takes us.”

And we have a teaser trailer:

More on this later, but this season is set in Italy and it's actually officially called The White Lotus Sicily. Here's a teaser trailer featuring Jennifer Coolidge's character.

The White Lotus season 2 will premiere in October!

Filming officially started in February 2022, so some people were hopeful that the series might return as soon as August 2022 (since that’s when the first season premiered), but that didn't happen.

But then HBO went ahead and confirmed that The White Lotus season 2 will be released on October 30, 2022:

In any case, we are really, really close. In preparation, maybe it's a good time to rewatch all of season 1 on HBO Max.

It'll have a whole new cast.

Okay, so season 2 is basically going to be its own thing. This is setting The White Lotus up to be an anthology series like American Horror Story, where we’ve got a whole new set of characters and a different setting but similar themes.

The second season is going to be featuring new guests, staff, and a different resort location. And the cast is a really solid lineup that includes stars Aubrey Plaza, Theo James, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Imperioli, Murray Abraham, Adam DiMarco, Tom Hollander, Leo Woodall, Meghann Fahy, and Will Sharpe.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Aubrey will play Harper Spiller, a woman on vacation with her husband, played by Will. And they’re vacationing with their friends, husband and wife Cameron and Daphne Babcock, played by Theo and Meghann. Haley is going to be Portia, a young woman traveling with her boss. Murray will be Bert Di Grasso, an elderly man traveling with his son Dominic (Michael) and grandson Albie (Adam). And Tom will be an English expat named Quentin.

But one familiar face is confirmed for a comeback.

Emmy winner Jennifer Coolidge will be back for season 2, reprising her role as Tanya McQuoid, the weepy wealthy woman who was mourning the loss of her mother. But it’s unclear how big of a part Tanya will be playing in the new season’s storyline. She does feature heavily in the teaser trailer, though!

So far, Jennifer is the only confirmed regular returning for the show. There’s no indication that any of the other season 1 cast members would be doing the same. “We only made one-year deals with the actors,” White told IndieWire in an interview. “So we’d have to find out who is even available.”

It’s going to be set in Italy.

For this season, we’ll be taking a trip to gorgeous, gorgeous Italy. Variety reported back in January that the show would be filming specifically in Sicily, and the fictional Italian White Lotus resort will be set in the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace. Last season, the Hawaii location was actually also shot at the Four Seasons Resort Maui.

And it will deal with "sexual politics."

As you know if you watched season 1, the idea of class, race, and privilege all factored heavily into the storyline. Colonialism was a major theme of the show. For season 2, the focus is going to be a little different.

“I didn’t know that I had the gumption to wade into those waters again, knowing I was going to get sniper fire from every direction,” White said in an interview with Vulture. “Maybe the classic sexual politics, the naughty subversive stuff we’re getting into, will take the edge off a little bit from that.”

For season 2, the focus is going to be a little different, and there's going to be a lot of gender roles stuff, especially between Meghann Fahy and Aubrey Plaza's characters. Cannot wait to watch it all play out!
