Whistler Skier Gets Real: "We Need Snow"

In a YouTube video shared earlier today, outdoor content creator James Pavelick (of Rise & Alpine) explored Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia's piste.

His findings? More snow is desperately needed—the lower portion of the mountain had little to no coverage this week.

The story was better on the upper reaches of Blackcomb and Whistler, where skiable runs currently exist. However, said runs are still home to rocks and early-season obstacles.

It's an unfortunate state of affairs—several resorts across the Pacific Northwest have struggled to open this month due to unseasonably low snowfall.

But, thankfully, there's a silver lining. A significant storm is expected to hit the coast this weekend, starting today, Friday, December 1st. While snowfall totals vary depending on the location, Whistler Blackcomb could pick up 10+ inches.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued the following warning for this afternoon and evening in the Sea to Sky area: "An intense frontal trough will bring snow to inland areas of the south coast tonight. Snow is expected to develop early this evening, and become heavy overnight."

The storm's timing couldn't be better. With a bit of luck, Mother Nature's special delivery will get Whistler Blackcomb and its fellow Pacific Northwest resorts to a more tenable position coverage-wise by the end of the weekend.
