Whistler Reporting Fresh Snow Up Top

The season continues rolling forward at Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia.

This morning, the resort started the day with five and a half inches of fresh snow.

April is a funny time of year at Whistler Blackcomb and other Pacific Northwest ski resorts. You might be skiing slushy spring snow one day, only to find yourself riding powder the next. Sometimes, you can do both on the same day.

While Whistler Blackcomb recently called off summer skiing on the Horstman Glacier, plenty of time remains in the standard ski season. The resort's website currently states that Blackcomb and Whistler (the two separate sides of the mountain) close on April 14th and May 20th, respectively.

This window of time—the late season at Whistler Blackcomb—delivered one of the best days of skiing I've ever had. Heck, it might've been one of the best days I've had, period.

In Squamish, where I lived then, the weather was warm and spring-like. Yet, we still decided to go skiing, finding, to our surprise, that Whistler's upper mountain was coated with fresh snow. After sating ourselves with powder off the Peak Express Chair for a few hours, we returned to Squamish's spring warmth, spending the rest of the evening at a party in the woods.

In short, don't sleep on Whistler Blackcomb during the late season—sleeper days, like the recently reported refresh, can turn back the clock and deliver mid-winter conditions on the upper mountain. Partying in the woods afterward is an additional, but not necessary bonus.
