How To Choose Pickleball Sets
Tony Roig is the founder of the YouTube channel In2Pickle and (along with fellow Tube creator CJ Johnson) co-founder of WeArePickleball. He suggests these factors to consider when shopping for pickleball sets:
Paddle weight. “Stay away from wood paddle sets," Roig advises. "They may seem like a good deal, but they are generally too heavy. You want paddles to be no more than about 8 ounces per paddle. The small muscles in your forearms will thank you.”
Number of paddles. Paddle sets typically come with two or four paddles. Roig suggests looking for a set that has at least the minimum number you need, “but consider having another paddle or two around for friends and family to join you.”
Paddle manufacturer. “Rather than choosing your paddle set from a big box store or an unknown company, you can now get a set from one of the sport’s established pickleball manufacturers,” Roig says. “The best budget paddle sets available now are the SLK Paddles from Selkirk and the Ben Johns Blue Lightning Paddles from Joola. If you are a Costco member, the Selkirk Latitude bundle is a good price and gives you a step up in paddles.”
Balls. Roig notes that even if the pickleball set you choose includes pickleballs, it’s common for people to purchase additional higher-end options separately. “Try out the Franklin X-40 balls for outdoor play—they fit the bill,” he says.
