Oppenheimer is an epic biographical thriller film that was released on July 11, 2023 at Le Grand Rex in Paris, France and on July 21, 2023 in the United States and United Kingdom. Running for 180 minutes and with a $100 million budget, the film was written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. It is also based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Oppenheimer, the film, centers around J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb” because of his significant participation in the Manhattan Project during World War II. The Manhattan Project was a research and development program that sought to make nuclear weapons during the War. The film follows Oppenheimer’s personal life, studies, time teaching at the University of California, Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology, direction at the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II, and experience in the 1954 security hearing.

Who should you expect to see acting in Oppenheimer? Just a completely star-studded cast that includes Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s Wife “Kitty,” Matt Damon as head of the Manhattan Project Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as the United States Atomic Energy Commission member Lewis Strauss, and Florence Pugh as Oppenheimer’s communist lover Jean Tatlock. Other supporting cast members include Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, and more.

What helped launch Oppenheimer to the top of the box office is the fact that it was released on the same day as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie. Viewers saw how the two strikingly different films could be viewed as a double feature, and thus, the term “Barbenheimer” was born.

Since its release, Christopher Nolan’s film has won five Golden Globe Awards. Additionally, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Oppenheimer one of the top ten films of 2023. On top of those accolades, the film won eight Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, four Saturn Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Satellite Awards. Plus, Oppenheimer‘s score won one Grammy Award. Oppenheimer earned thirteen nominations for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards, which is the most nominations Nolan has ever received at the Oscars for one of his films. The thirteen nominations include “The Big Five”: Best Picture, Directing, Leading Actor, and Adapted Screenplay.

As of March 4, 2024, Oppenheimer has grossed $960.6 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time (Joker sits at the top). It’s also now the highest-grossing biographical film of all time (it beat Bohemian Rhapsody).

After hearing about Oppenheimer‘s plot, cast, “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, box office numbers, and awards, you’re probably wondering if the film lives up to all of the hype. See for yourself by continuing to scroll to find out where to watch Oppenheimer at home.
