Greenberg was pivotal in Gerwig's career as it was her first collaboration with "partner in life and in art", Noah Baumbach. Starring as Florence Marr opposite Ben Stiller in the titular role of Roger Greenberg, Gerwig got a chance to showcase her skill as an actor, which led to her eventual collaborations that catapulted her career.

The first of these key collaborations was on Frances Ha, where Gerwig co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach. Starring as the lead, Frances Halladay, Gerwig is at her peak in showcasing how smart she is as an actor and writer. With her relatability and vulnerability on full display, Gerwig entered a new chapter of her career where she was at the forefront in nuanced roles, reflecting the movies she grew up loving.

Mistress America (2015)

Directed by Noah Baumbach

Written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach

Where to Watch:

  • VOD: YouTube, Google, Apple TV, Vudu Amazon Prime Video

Mistress America was the next collaboration from the dynamic duo Baumbach and Gerwig. Once again collaborating on the script with Gerwig in the lead and Baumbach in the director's chair, the two revive the screwball comedy.

Lola Kirke stars as Tracy alongside Gerwig, who plays Brooke. The two are step-sisters-to-be and end up seeking out Brooke's ex-best friend and nemesis Mamie-Claire when one of Brooke's many business plans goes awry. It's Gerwig, with all her chaotic brilliance, at her best and equally sharp and witty.

20th Century Women (2016)

Written and directed by Mike Mills

Where to Watch:

  • Subscription: Max

  • Premium Subscription: Hulu, Amazon Prime Video

  • VOD: Vudu, YouTube, Google, Apple TV

The last film she acted in before heading off to direct Lady Bird was Mike Mills' 20th Century Women. Gerwig starred alongside Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Billy Crudup and Lucas Jade Zumann. Sun-soaked and beautiful, the film takes place in Santa Barbara in 1979, where Dorothea (Annette Bening) is trying to raise her son (Lucas Jade Zumann) in an ever-changing world.

Loosely autobiographical, Mills earned an Oscar nomination for his Original Screenplay that took influence from his own childhood and relationship with his mother. Gerwig plays Abbie, a homage to many women in Mills' life, most notably his sister. Abbie is a photographer recovering from cervical cancer, lodging in Dorothea's home.

Jackie (2016)

Directed by Pablo Larraín

Written by Noah Oppenheim

Where to Watch:

  • VOD: YouTube, Google, Apple TV, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video

Also released the same year as 20th Century Women was Jackie, a story following the assassination of JFK that observes Natalie Portman as his wife Jackie Kennedy. Gerwig star alongside Portman as Nancy Tuckerman, the White Houses Social Secretary. For an added 20th Century Women easter egg, the film also features Billy Crudup as The Journalist.

No Strings Attached (2011)

Directed by Ivan Reitman

Written by Elizabeth Meriwether and Mike Samonek

Where to Watch:

  • Free: Pluto TV

  • Subscription: Netflix

  • VOD: YouTube, Google, Amazon, Apple TV, Redbox, Vudu

Jackie was not the first time Gerwig and Portman collaborated, however, as they also starred in the 2011 Ivan Reitman romcom, No Strings Attached. Playing Patrice, Gerwig is Portman's roommate and friend and has some great scenes opposite Jake Johnson as Eli.

Arthur (2011)

Directed by Jason Winer

Written by Peter Baynham and Steve Gordon

Where to Watch:

  • VOD: Amazon, YouTube, Google, Apple TV, Vudu, Redbox

Greta Gerwig was booked and busy in 2011 because she also starred in the remake of Arthur opposite Russell Brand in the titular role. It's also a fun piece of movie trivia as it's the first collaboration between Gerwig and Helen Mirren, who stars as The Narrator in Barbie.

Gerwig plays Naomi, the ingenue who rolls into Arthur's life in an unexpected meet cute in Grand Central. The two see many ups and downs as Arthur tackles his love of money and drinking in pursuit of Naomi.

Damsels in Distress (2011)

Written and directed by Whit Stillman

Where to Watch:

  • Free: Amazon Prime Video

  • Subscription: Hulu

  • VOD: YouTube, Google, AppleTV, Vudu

If two 2011 titles weren't enough, Gerwig also found herself playing Violet in the wonderfully whacky musical comedy, Damsels in Distress from director Whit Stillman.

Violet is the lead of a trio of girls looking to repair their college and the students who go there through the therapy of tap dancing.

Maggie's Plan (2015)

Directed by Rebecca Miller

Written by Rebecca Miller and Karen Rinaldi

Where to Watch:

  • Subscription: Max

  • VOD: YouTube, Google, Apple TV, Vudu

Entering 2015, Gerwig stars in Rebecca Miller's Maggie's Plan. Featuring Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore, Gerwig stars in the titular role of Maggie, a woman looking to have a baby on her own when she crosses paths with the married John (Ethan Hawke). When his marriage breaks down, and Maggie and John are free to pursue their relationship, Maggie decides Georgette was right for him all along and schemes to bring the two back together.

Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007)

Directed by Joe Swanberg

Written by Joe Swanberg, Greta Gerwig and Kent Osborne

Where to Watch:

  • Premium Subscription: Amazon Prime Video

And finally, if you've caught up on all of these and want to dig deep into the archives, you can journey back to 2007, when Gerwig was on the come-up.

Her debut as a co-writer/actress was in Joe Swanberg's Hannah Takes The Stairs. Also featured are Kent Osborne, Andrew Bujalski, Ry Russo-Young, Mark Duplass, Todd Rohal, Tipper Newton and Kris Rey, whose careers have all blossomed in their own ways since.

The film captures a period when young filmmakers took their careers into their own hands, making stuff together with no script, budget or professional equipment. It's a great film to reflect on now Gerwig has hit the big bucks at the box office and serves as a hopeful reminder for the young filmmakers out there.
