National Lampoon, Caddyshack, and Community are the lasting Chevy Chase titles, but the man was incredibly prolific in the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. One of his hits included the 1985 spy comedy, Spies Like Us — it’s rarely talked about four decades later, but it grossed a solid $72 million in 1985 dollars (about $200 million today). People liked it. Chaseheads would likely get a kick out of it.

Directed by John Landis, the movie features a star-studded cast including Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Donna Dixon, Robert Paynter, Steve Forrest, William Prince, Bruce Davison, Bernie Casey, Terry Gillliam, Bob Hope, Tom Hatten, Mark Stewart, Charles McKeown, Ricco Ross, B.B. King, and Vanessa Angel. The comedy is hard to find, though not impossible. It’s not any streaming service, but it’s available to rent from a variety of services.
Spies follows Austin Millbarge (Dan Aykroyd) and Emmett Fitz-Hume (Chevy Chase), who join a CIA espionage program in an attempt to escape dull government jobs. The two end up working on a mission in Pakistan, led by General Sline (Steve Forrest). Hijinks ensue when they’re used as decoys to expose the Russians for a Cold War clash.

Spies isn’t on services like Netflix or Hulu, but it’s available to rent for $2.99 from Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu. The movie is $3.99 on Apple. It’s also available for purchase for $12.99 at all those services.
The movie isn’t particularly well-reviewed (with a 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but it has its diehard fans.
“It may never reach comic heights but, nonetheless, maintains a good-natured charm,” Metropolis’ John J. Puccio wrote in 2010.
Spies Like Us also spawned a title track written and performed by Paul McCartney, his last Billboard top ten single until 2015. Landis also directed a music video for the song, despite calling it terrible in 2017.
