Where To Ski Memorial Day Weekend 2024

The sun is shining. The smell of brats wafts from the parking lot. Your entrepreneurial friend has a trunk full of your favorite beverage—alcoholic or not; I’m a big fan of Spindrifts, maybe you are, too—and the slopes beckon. Thank heavens for federally recognized holidays. It’s Memorial Day weekend.

Maybe you’re planning a quick late-season ski trip with the extra time off or searching for a more local, lift-accessed option. Either way, here are the U.S. ski resorts where you can get your long weekend snowsports kicks this year.

Arapahoe Basin is Colorado’s late-season skiing capital. The resort regularly remains open into June (sometimes July!), providing steadfast skiers an excellent opportunity to keep the season going. This May, the resort’s throwing the Festival of the Brewpubs the day before Memorial Day, so if you’ve got a twofer in you—and a hankering for craft beer—A-Basin’s your spot. Can’t make it this coming weekend? Don’t fret. A-Basin already confirmed that it’ll be open next month.

After multiple season extensions, the final weekend of skiing at Arizona Snowbowl is approaching. The resort—popular amongst Flagstaff, Arizona, skiers—has some of the cheapest spring skiing tickets around. At the time of writing this, lift tickets cost $19, which is less than the price of two (maybe one?) cocktails at an overpriced après bar called Fromage or something. I know where I’d rather spend my money.

Killington Resort, Vermont

Superstar lives on. The trail, home to Killington’s famously long East Coast seasons, still holds enough snow for Memorial Day weekend shredding. It’s a humble offering, but you have to respect Killington’s late-season doggedness. They don’t know how to quit. In addition to Superstar, Killington plans to fire up its bike park on May 24th, opening the potential for some multi-sport days.

Last winter, Mammoth Mountain, California, kept the lifts spinning until August 6th, thanks to the now-legendary amount of snow that fell during the 2022-2023 ski season. Sadly, the resort won’t cruise nearly that far this season (Mammoth closes May 27th), making the upcoming long weekend your final chance to score some southern California lift-served turns. But skiing isn’t the only thing on tap—like Killington clientele, multi-sport athletes at Mammoth should be satiated: the resort’s touting the availability of skiing, biking, and golfing during Memorial Day weekend. I can see the to-do list already: harvest corn, pump berms, thwack balls, call it a day.

Mt. Bachelor, which closes May 26th, will almost be open on Memorial Day. Still, Saturday and Sunday are part of the long weekend, so the resort is an honorary member of this list. Slushy turns, volcanic views, and maybe the occasional Sage Cattabriga-Alosa sighting should abound at Mt. Bachelor this weekend. I think you know what to do.

Palisades Tahoe—another Californian holdout—is calling it quits on Memorial Day. Ahead of Memorial Day, on May 25th and 26th, an appetizer for Palisades’ final lift-serviced offering will occur: the Made in Tahoe festival. The event, which includes live music, food, and artists, celebrates all things local. As the last Lake Tahoe area ski resort standing, Palisades has the spring skiing market cornered, planning to keep several runs and lifts open through the 27th, alongside a smattering of terrain park options.

Snowbird, Utah

Speaking of last resorts standing, Snowbird is Utah’s final spring skiing bastion. As of now, it’ll stay open through “at least” Memorial Day weekend, meaning additional lift-accessed turns are still on the table. Snowbird is closed this week, having adopted a late-season weekends-only schedule, which should leave would-be attendees plenty of time to pick out the perfect long weekend, spring skiing outfit. I heard the Salt Lake City Goodwill Outlet has some screamin’ deals on floral shirts right now.

Timberline Lodge, Oregon

When it comes to May skiing, Timberline is a reliable shoe-in. The resort keeps its Palmer Lift spinning summer long, so Memorial Day weekend isn’t an ending but the beginning of something new. While the resort’s spring passes are no longer for sale (they do provide mountain access through Memorial Day, however), summer ski passes are now available to the tune of $1400.

Winter Park, Colorado

Winter Park’s season is running “as late as possible” with access via the Mary Jane portion of its piste. The Winter Park side is now closed for the season, but the Jane Beach, which features live DJs, drink specials, and corn hole at the Mary Jane base area on Saturdays, more than makes up for it. You might spot a plastic flamingo, too.
