Where To Ski In May 2024

By now, you know the drill. It's spring, meaning the 2023-2024 ski season for much of the U.S. is breathing its final, sun-soaked breaths.

That's only part of the story, though. A select group of resorts plan to keep the lifts spinning and the party going into May and maybe beyond.

Keep scrolling for a state-by-state list of where you can make turns in May of 2024.

The closing dates shown here are accurate as of April 18th, 2024. Please note that all come with a weather and conditions permitting caveat. This article will be updated periodically.

Arizona

Arizona Snowbowl, Arizona

Closing Day: May 5th

Arizona Snowbowl joined the May skiing crew late, announcing in late April that it would offer an additional bonus weekend of skiing on May 4th and 5th. Keep in mind that the resort is taking the week off—between April 29th and May 3rd—before its last gasp.

California

Mammoth Mountain, California

Closing Day: May 27th or later, snow conditions dependent

Last season, Mammoth Mountain, California, was the undisputed champ of summer skiing, remaining open until August 6th. While a repeat performance is unlikely—Mammoth saw record snowfall during the winter of 2023 and 2024—the resort plans to keep the lifts turning until at least May 27th this year, with access to some of the Sierra Nevada's best terrain.

Palisades Tahoe, California

Closing Day: May 27th

Palisades Tahoe claims to be the "Spring Skiing Capital." That's a bold statement, to be sure, but when you're home to world-renowned lifts like KT-22, it seems a little more reasonable. At Palisades, freeride culture runs deep, so May isn't just a good time to ski—you might catch an impressive show as local shredders do their thing, too.

Colorado

Arapahoe Basin

Closing Day: TBA

Arapahoe Basin, affectionately known as A-Basin by locals, regularly offers skiing until early June. Nestled in Colorado's ski resort dense Summit County, A-Basin is home to a laidback, mom-and-pop energy that provides an alternative to the state's ritzier locales. But that doesn't mean the skiing's dinky at A-Basin. Here, you'll find plenty of runs that'll test your mettle.

Breckenridge Resort

Closing Day: TBA

Breckenridge's high alpine terrain across Peaks 6, 7, and 8 will be lift-accessible as late as possible into May. The resort is home to North America's highest lift, the Imperial SuperChair, which tops out above 12,000 feet. While Colorado first-timers might want to watch out for altitude sickness, the views and the slushy turns are undoubtedly worth the payoff.

Breckenridge Resort

Copper Mountain

Closing Day: TBA

Copper Mountain has decided to extend its season into May as long as the snow allows for the second year in a row. Last spring, the resort closed on May 7th, clinching its longest season in 25 years. For now, bets are off for Copper Mountain's exact closing date this season, but in the meantime, there should be plenty of soft, slushy snow on tap at the resort. You know what to do.

Loveland Ski Area

Closing Day: May 12th

Like Arapahoe Basin, Loveland Ski Area is typically one of the nation's first ski areas to open in late October or early November. Also, like Arapahoe Basin, they're often one of the last resorts standing, offering skiing into May. But Loveland, which provides another laidback option for Denver-area skiers, is much more than its impressively long operating seasons. Its varied terrain sees to that.

Winter Park

Closing Day: TBA

Rounding out our list of Colorado springtime options is Winter Park. It's another Centennial State heavy hitter that serves up 3,081 acres of skiable terrain, 171 trails, and 28 lifts. On April 21st, the Winter Park side of the resort's terrain will close, but the Mary Jane side will remain open as long as possible. Last winter, Winter Park kept the season alive until May 29th.

Maine

Sugarloaf

Closing Day: May 5th, weather dependent

Boasting 1,360 acres of skiable, developed terrain, it's safe to say that Sugarloaf is a Maine, ahem, mainstay. That impressive acreage makes the resort the largest in the state, a title it solidified with its recent West Mountain expansion, which added 12 new trails. Sugarloaf calls itself the "King of Spring"—the best way to verify that claim is to go and check it out for yourself.

Nevada

Lee Canyon

Closing Day: TBA

Lee Canyon holds the unique distinction of being the closest ski resort to Las Vegas. Despite its proximity to the infamous Sin City, Lee Canyon offers a different, cleaner kind of fun with 445 acres of skiable terrain. If you're tired of the blackjack and slot machines, this is where you should go to clear your head. The resort is eyeing a final weekend of operations in early May—stay tuned.

Oregon

Mt. Bachelor

Closing Day: May 26th

Mount Bachelor isn't the steepest mountain around—a rule that applies in spades to much of Oregon's ski resort offerings—but it makes up for that lack with a decidedly unique terrain feature. The Summit lift transports skiers to Mount Bachelor's 9,065-foot peak, providing a 360-degree, choose-your-own-adventure-style roster of descents. Catch it when the sun's shining, and you won't be disappointed.

Mt. Hood Meadows

Closing Day: May 18th

Did someone say rolling, surfy terrain? Yep. We're still in Oregon. Like Mount Bachelor, Mt. Hood Meadows is the type of ski resort Dr. Seuss could've designed. With stellar views of the neighboring Mt. Hood and loads of sneaky gladed runs, it's hard to go wrong here, particularly when the corn snow harvest is firing.

Timberline Lodge

Closing day: Late summer

Timberline Lodge's legendary Spring Pass is currently on sale for $199 (the last day to purchase a Spring Pass is May 6th), offering lift access through May 27th. If you've ever wanted to spend a month skiing jumps and rails to your heart's content, Timberline is the place to do it. Don't sleep on one of skiing's best spring deals—and catch in a dip the gorgeous, nearby Trillium Lake while you're at it. And if you can't make it down in May, no worries, Timberline spins the lifts on the Palmer Snowfield all summer long.

Utah

Brian Head

Closing Day: May 5th

Located away from the buzz of Salt Lake City, Brian Head is one of Utah's southernmost ski resorts. It also boasts the state's highest base elevation, clocking in at 9,600 feet. What isn't high, though, is Brian Head's ticket prices. This spring, the resort—which uses dynamic pricing—is offering tickets as cheap as $19. Good luck finding a ticket that cheap anywhere else in Utah.

Brighton Resort

Closing Day: May 19th

Brighton Resort's popular month of May skiing—called the "Milly Meltdown" last season—has returned. This year, after the resort ceases regular operations on April 28th, Crest 6 will reopen for spring skiing from May 3rd through May 19th during the Meltdown. Brighton's known for its dedicated park scene, so if you're looking to dial in your rail skills—or just watch from the sidelines—it's the place to be this spring.

Snowbird

Closing Day: TBA

Nestled alongside Alta Ski Area, Snowbird carries the Little Cottonwood Canyon spring skiing torch season after season. Steeps and dedicated freeriders abound at this resort, so odds are, if you show up in May, you'll bump into some seriously high-caliber skiers. Who knows? Maybe they'll show you around. Snowbird aims to remain through at least Memorial Day, although an official closing day hasn't been announced yet.

Solitude Mountain Resort

Closing Day: TBA

While Solitude Mountain Resort recently hosted the Red Bull Cascade event, constructing a course fit for skiing's best, it has plenty on tap for those who aren't interested in throwing double and triple corks. Solitude is something of a lesser-known resort in the skiing mecca that is the Salt Lake City area, but it's no slouch, totaling 500 inches on average of that famously light Utah powder.

Vermont

Jay Peak

Closing Day: TBA

Jay Peak receives the most snow out of any resort in Eastern North America, benefitting from a famous, perhaps mystical, weather phenomenon called the "Jay Cloud." It aims to remain open through mid-May, with weekend skiing serviced by the Jet lift.

Killington

Closing Day: TBA

Holding it down for the Northeast is Killington, Vermont. Against all odds, the resort gives local skiers what they want season after season: springy, lift-accessed turns down the iconic Superstar trail. It's a labor of love, requiring hours of snowmaking and logistical maneuvering on Killington's behalf. The result, of course, is worth it, though. The resort often remains open into late May or early June.

Sugarbush

Closing Day: May 5th

Sugarbush's expansive terrain covers two peaks: Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Ellen. While the latter has closed for the season, springtime operations forge ahead on Mt. Lincoln, culminating in a planned closed weekend set for May 4th and 5th. The resort will likely be closed for some or all of the weekdays beyond April 21st, so keep your eyes trained on the snow report for current updates.
