Jack Black in 'School of Rock.'

School of Rock is one of those movies that you can’t help but watch if you happen to catch it on TV some Saturday afternoon, but it almost didn’t happen. When producer Scott Rudin approached director Richard Linklater about helming the project, Linklater passed. “I kind of turn down most of these things,” Linklater explained to Esquire in 2013. “But Scott Rudin said, ‘No, I’m not accepting your pass.’”

Linklater ultimately agreed to take on the movie, which was written by The White Lotus creator Mike White. White built the idea for the film after living next door to Jack Black, who played substitute teacher Dewey Finn. “I had the idea of him leading a band of little kids somehow it just seemed like a funny visual,” White recalled in an oral history published by Paramount in 2018. “Then I got the idea that it would be fun to have him be more of a W.C. Fields a little bit, like a guy who isn't really somebody you'd want around kids, but that's part of the fun of it.”

The gambit paid off, with the film earning more than $131 million at the box office and spawning a TV show and a stage musical with music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

“The best part about it for me was how it inspired kids to pick up instruments and follow that passion,” the late Kevin Clark (who played Freddy) told Complex in 2017. His costar Rivkah Reyes (Katie) agreed, telling Paramount that the movie changed their life. “I'll say this 1,000 times until the day I die, ‘I would not be the artist that I am today if it wasn't for getting to be in that movie,’” Reyes explained. “I was at a concert this weekend and a young, female bassist, probably in her early 20s, came up to me, recognized me from the film and was like, ‘Oh, my God, you're the person who inspired me to pick this up.’”
