Queen Elizabeth, the longest-serving British monarch, died one year ago at Balmoral Castle at age 96. Today, members of the royal family—including Prince Harry, who is visiting from California—visited the Chapel to pay respects to their beloved matriarch.

Following the Queen's state funeral at Westminster Abbey, there was a committal service at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle conducted by the Dean of Windsor. Later that evening, the Queen was buried with her husband, Prince Philip, alongside her parents and sister in Windsor Castle's King George VI Memorial Chapel in the Royal Vault. The burial and service was entirely private, attended by King Charles and other members of the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth's name has now been inscribed alongside Prince Philip's and her parents' on the ledger stone in the King George VI Memorial Chapel. The stone now reads "George VI 1895-1952" and "Elizabeth 1900-2002," followed by a metal star of the Order of the Garter, and then "Elizabeth II 1926-2022" and "Philip 1921-2021." All four royals were members of the Order of the Garter.

King George VI, who died in 1952, was originally interred in the Royal Vault and then transferred to the newly-constructed chapel on March 26, 1969. The Queen's mother was buried there in 2002, and the ashes of Princess Margaret, who passed in 2002, are also in the chapel.

"Princess Margaret was cremated, one of the first members of the royal family, because she wanted to be buried between her parents and there was only room, really, for ashes," Lady Glenconner, a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret, explained in the documentary Elizabeth: Our Queen.
