If you’re a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, you might be surprised to see that its sequel series, The Legend of Korra, takes place in a brand new city that wasn’t seen in the original show. Even so, the new Republic City actually has strong ties to the first series and its characters that might surprise you. So whether you’re just discovering The Legend of Korra and are learning more about where it takes place or doing a rewatch and needing a refresher, we’ve got you covered on everything about the Korra’s brand new home.

Here’s everything you need to know about Republic City from The Legend of Korra.

What is Republic City?

Republic City is the capitol of the United Republic of Nations. After the war, Fire Lord Zuko and Avatar Aang decided to turn the old Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom into a neutral state where anyone from the four nations can live. Because of this, the culture of the state is mixed with a lot of different traditions from each of the nations with benders and non-benders also living together in harmony.

The city is run by a council that has one representative from each of the nations to ensure that things remain peaceful in the city. While the officials help enact rules, laws, and oversee trials in Republic City, they are not elected and are instead chosen by the leaders from their own nation.

The city also has its own police force, made primarily by metalbenders, that was established by Toph Beifong.

Some well-known areas around the city include Aang Memorial Island, Air Temple Island, the Pro-Bending Arena, and the Little Ba Sing Se Mall.

What is the culture of Republic City?

Because the city is made up of people from various nations, it's known for being a giant melting pot of different cultures and traditions. Most people wear the color/clothes of the nation where they come from/their bending type. For example, Mako wears red as he is a firebender, while his brother, Bolin, wears green as he's an earthbender. However, they are from both nations as their mother was from the Fire Nation and his father was from the Earth Kingdom.

Republic City is known for its technological advances thanks to the Sato family's Future Industries and their competitor, Cabbage Corp. Both are known for their cars, The Satomobile and the Cabbage Car, which allowed residents of Republic City to travel around the city.

The city also has its own power plant which is powered by firebenders who are able to generate lightning. Unlike some other cities seen in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, the city has tall skyscrapers and has more of a steampunk feel, likely due to its technological advances.

Probending is a popular sport in the series, which allows teams of three to compete against each other by fighting to push each other off the edge of the arena. In later seasons, thanks to Varrick's invention, moving pictures called movers started to become popular, which also created mover stars and a new celebrity culture in Republic City.
