When the third season of 13 Reasons Why was officially announced last month, it came with a pretty stunning twist that even had 13RW skeptics intrigued. Bryce Walker, the monstrous jock who raped both Jessica Davis and Hannah Baker during season 1 and essentially got away with a slap on the wrist in season 2, is dead. Even better? Someone murdered him. Before you delve headfirst into your binge, here’s a reminder of exactly where we left off with Bryce last year.

Season 2 was built around a pair of court cases: the civil trial between Hannah Baker’s parents and Liberty High School and, later, the criminal trial against Bryce that took place after Jessica reported her rape. In a grimly realistic moment, Bryce got an obscenely light sentence—just three months probation, for rape—and transferred to a private school after realizing he was no longer welcome at Liberty High.

Bryce also ended his friendship with Monty, the one jock who just might have him beat as far as psychopathy goes. Monty wanted to get revenge on the students who testified in court (and specifically on Tyler), but Bryce warned against it and distanced himself from Monty. Furious, Monty went right ahead and took his brutal revenge anyway by sexually assaulting Tyler, which is going to have major repercussions throughout season 3.

Here’s the other thing you need to remember about Bryce: There are a whole lot of people on this show who could conceivably want him dead. There’s Jessica, his victim and “the person he hurt the most” per season 3’s trailer. There’s Clay, who already went to Bryce’s house with a gun last season and had to be talked out of shooting him by Justin. There’s Tyler, who planned a school shooting at the Spring Fling last season before being talked down by Clay. There’s Mrs. Baker, who may (rightfully) hold Bryce responsible for driving her daughter to suicide. Even Mr. Porter has a history of violence toward Bryce—remember this iconic moment?

So...yeah. In conclusion, there’s no shortage of convincing possible answers to the “Who killed Bryce?” mystery, and if the trailer’s anything to go by, season 3 is going to spend plenty of time exploring each and every character’s potential motivation for wanting him dead. All the more reason to start bingeing immediately.
