Whether it's an artist selling their own handmade ceramics or a designer sourcing goods from abroad, there's a charm to the pieces that exist within these local storefronts. Plus, you likely won't find the items anywhere else, making your purchase truly one-of-a-kind. If you ask the House Beautiful team for their favorite small businesses, their answers run the gamut.

Associate Shopping Editor Janae Mackenzie's obsessed with Missouri-based candle brand The Corner Candleshop and says: "They’re known for their hand-poured candles, but they also offer room sprays, fragrance oils and wax melts. Several of the scents rotate seasonally, but with over 175 in their arsenal, they get as unique and specific as buttered popcorn and cilantro." Meanwhile, Creative Director Nicolas Neubeck loves Slow Roads Design Studio, based in New York, for "their skill in curating fine art, vintage home decor, and handcrafted objects."

"I am truly obsessed with this Kansas City, Missouri-based candle shop and talk about it any chance I get. Some of my favorites are Blackberry Basil (sweet but not cloying) and Happy Place (a blend of citrus and hibiscus that whisks you away). One of their signatures, Brookside Bungalow, is my go-to room spray for a quick freshen up before company comes over, and I get compliments on how good the place smells every time.

If you get the chance to visit their Kansas City storefront, be sure to stop in and smell all the different votives for yourself. They also change decorations with the seasons, and they’re delightfully maximalist.
