Where did the Pinegrove Shuffle dance on TikTok come from?

The “Pinegrove Shuffle” is a dance trend making the rounds on social media right now and if you’ve wondered where it came from, you have TikTok user Garrett Lee (@garrettlee39) to thank for it.

When did the Pinegrove Shuffle start?

On June 9, 2023, Lee posted a video of himself dancing to “Need 2” by American indie rock band Pinegrove.

Lee’s video immediately received over 4 million views and his dance quickly caught on, inspiring others to record and post their own Pinegrove Shuffles.

Even days later, the dance was filling TikTok accounts across the globe.

“95% of my fyp is the pinegrove shuffle, and I’m not complaining,” noted one user.

Lee also posted other videos of himself dancing — including one of him performing an Irish jig — but none have caught on to be as popular as the Pinegrove Shuffle.

The Pinegrove Shuffle dance became so popular that DJ Khaled even hopped in on the trend, thanks to a clever recasting of him dancing that someone set to the song.

And in what you might call a full circle moment, TikTok user @tateconfer23 posted a video of running into the Pinegrove Shuffler himself, Lee, in public, where he, of course, urged the creator to do the dance again.

Lee obliged, and the moment has captured 1.6 million views and counting.

“Bro IS the pinegrove shuffle,” @bazookabubbiez observed.

What to know about the band Pinegrove

In a 2016 Reddit discussion, Pinegrove’s guitar player and singer-songwriter Evan Stephens Hall was asked what the song “Need 2” meant and he replied that it was about songwriting.

In the same Reddit thread, Hall also described Pinegrove’s overall music as “music for the promotion of introspective partying.” Since the resurgence of the song originally released in 2014, Hall also recently posted an Instagram video explaining how to play the song on the guitar.
