Where did the new ‘Happy Birthday’ song come from?

The ‘Happy Birthday’ song, which people have used to celebrate for over 100 years, is getting a remodel thanks to TikTok.

During May, Danyell Randall (@yellz_lesspartywithyellz) celebrated her daughter’s 14th birthday. During the party, her guests sang the traditional version of the birthday song and then followed it up with a new rendition of the tune.

Randall’s post only received 17,000 views, but when one of her guests named Isaiah Jaay (@IsaiahJaay1) reposted it in June, the video began to gain traction. The reposted version of the video received over 2.5 million views and many TikTokers began to clamor and say they were going to use it at their next function.

“I ain’t never heard this before I need this for my birthday,” replied @caramelkizzes.

The original happy birthday song, titled ‘Happy Birthday to You’ was published in 1893 as part of a book called Song Stories for the Kindergarten. Over the years, small changes were made to the song until the version widely accepted as standard was introduced in 1933. In 1980, the song was remixed again. Stevie Wonder released his rendition as a song on his album Hotter Than July, which became a staple in the Black community.

With this remix spreading quickly on social media, the creators are looking to capitalize on its success by releasing it on streaming platforms.

“THE BIRTHDAY SONG is officially out on ALL PLATFORMS, wrote @isaiahjaay1 in his caption. “Lets make this the new official birthday song all over the world.”

Now that users can stream the song, many people are expecting to hear it at their next party.

“I sent to my family! Nobody better come with that throwback version! I have given ample time for everyone to learn the 2023 version,” replied @shanda_rene89.

Only time will tell if this new version will ultimately become the standard. However for the time being, TikTokers have a new way to wish someone a happy birthday.
