Here’s Where America Is Flying This Holiday Season

It’s the Thursday before Christmas—which means Americans everywhere are about to depart for their holiday destination of choice. For some, that means going home or to an in-law’s house. But for others, the extra days off provide the perfect opportunity to get out of the cold and go on a warm-weather adventure.

According to flight search data from TripAdvisor, the most popular domestic destination to fly to this holiday season is Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Hawaiian capital has long been a dreamed-about vacation spot. These days, that buzz continues to grow: more and more luxury brands are opening stores (Hermès for example, recently expanded their store at the Royal Hawaiian Center to a three-story global flagship). Mega-resorts now mingle with cool boutique hotels like the Surfjack. And the culinary scene, with a mix of cultural influences, is quickly becoming some of the coolest in the United States. Added bonus: when you’re surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, you know that the fish is going to be great.

We should also state the obvious. Since Honolulu is located on, well, an island, you must fly there. (Unless you feel like going on a really long boat ride.) And since TripAdvisor’s data is based on flight searches, who knows how many tickets were actually booked.

But, purchased flights or not, it seems that many Americans were seeking some fun in the sun this holiday season. All but one of the top 10 destinations were in warm-weather locales. (The one outlier? New York City, coming in at 7.)

Phoenix was the number two destination of choice, followed by Miami, Orlando, and Las Vegas. Three Florida destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and Tampa, rounded out the bottom of the list.

Below, the top 10 cities in order.

2. Phoenix

3. Miami

4. Orlando
