What's open, what's closed for Juneteenth 2023 in Kentucky? Here's what to know.

Juneteenth is here, but Kentucky's relationship with America's newest federal holiday is complicated.

Although June 19 has been recognized as a federal holiday since 2021, Kentucky does not recognize it as a state holiday. In February, state Sen. Gerald Neal filed SB 270, a measure that would allow Kentucky to join the 28 states and the District of Columbia that recognize Juneteenth, according to a Pew Research Center study.

Gov. Andy Beshear has signed a proclamation every year since 2021 to keep Juneteenth's federal holiday status alive before the legislation is passed to make it a permanent state holiday. However, Louisville Metro Government does recognize the holiday, first declared in 2021 by former mayor Greg Fischer.
