What's Your Fancy?: Matthew López Shares His Writing Essentials

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Matthew López is busy. Very busy. He's adapting the classic comedy Some Like It Hot for Broadway, where it'll premiere this December. He's also finishing post-production on the film adaptation of the massively popular novel Red, White & Royal Blue, which is expected to come out next year, and he's also been tapped to write a remake of the Whitney Houston movie The Bodyguard. On Tuesday, his epic, two-part drama The Inheritance, inspired by E.M. Forster's Howards Ends, opens at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles following celebrated runs in London and New York, where it won four Tonys, including Best Play. Here, López answers a few questions about his writing rituals, the guilty pleasures he picked up while working in the U.K., and his favorite Forster deep cuts and movie screenplays. Spoiler alert: Moonstruck is among them. "It's a perfect script," he says.
