Sometimes, you know within the very first line(s). It hooks you right away, and you know you're in for a great film.

Like the first line of Stand by Me — right away you know what the movie is about, and you have to keep watching to discover how it happens.

The Departed is yet another film with a great opening line, this time by its antagonist. It sets up the time period and Frank perfectly.
