What’s red, blue, and hairy all over? Well, it's the aptly named Whatchamacallit on this season of The Masked Singer.

The fourth season of The Masked Singer recently premiered, finally providing us all with “something fun involving masks,” according to host Nick Cannon. Sixteen masked performers are included in this season of the show, with one secret celebrity drawing the short straw and becoming Whatchamacallit.

This hairy monstrosity rivals T-Pain’s Monster of season one and Victor Oladipo’s Thingamajig of season two, only less adorable. Think Cousin Itt falling into a vat of hair dye. And that's not to mention that plain odd eye placement on this character.

This, ahem, unique costume already has fans speculating about who is behind the hairball. To spark your own curiosity, here’s everything we know so far about Whatchamacallit. (This post will be updated throughout season 4 of The Masked Singer.)

What clues do we know about Whatchamacallit?

In Whatchamacallit’s intro package on a teaser episode of The Masked Singer, fans got a pretty major clue as to the identity of this masked celebrity—and it has to do with magic. “Some might say my career had a magical start,” the Whatchamacallit hints, accompanied by shot of a playing card on fire.

The hairy contestant also emphasized secrets in their welcome package, bringing attention to the “secret passageways” and “secret codes” on The Masked Singer set protect the identities of performers. Whatchamacallit also gave a shoutout to their “secret admirers” in the video.

“America, I know you’re ‘hair-dyeing’ to know my identity,” Whatchamacallit says in the intro package. “But forget trying to figure out who I am. Can someone just tell me what I am?” Now, that may be a bit more difficult.

During week 2, Whatchamacallit's first appearance, we watch the one-eyed monster's performance of Skee-lo's "I Wish." Here are other clues we learned from the episode

  • He's a self-admitted "shy guy" who lets other people "take the spotlight."

  • They can "dance with the stars," serve "candy bars," and "swing from the trees."

Soooooo we're still at a loss.

Who is Whatchamacallit on The Masked Singer?

As with all things magic, actor, singer, comedian and, yes, magician Neil Patrick Harris came up as an early fan guess. Harris’s name comes up almost every season as a guess, including much speculation that he was The Peacock in season two of the show. (The celebrity performer behind that extravagant costume ended up being Donny Osmond).

Fans also guessed basically any popular magician known to man. Names that came up on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter include noted magician and illusionist Criss Angel, illusionist and extreme performer David Blaine, and magician Zach King, who got his start on Vine with videos displaying “digital sleight of hand.” King is now incredibly popular on TikTok with more than 49 million followers. Just ask any Gen Z cool kid who he is.

Thus far, the names of Swizz Beats, Damien Lillard, and Tyler the Creator have come up by the judges. Good guesses, but looks like we'll need more clues to uncover the identity behind the one-eyed creature.
