What is 'Error Code 1001' in Roblox and is it real?: 'You may be in danger'

  • TikTok users are claiming that an error code pop-up in Roblox will warn players that they’re not alone and that they should call 911.

  • In early August, a TikToker made a mock-up of the error code, which spurred a number of other Roblox players to start talking about it.

  • In reality, there is no Roblox error code that tells users to call 911 because someone else is nearby. “Error code 1001” does not seem to exist on the platform at all.

What is ‘Error Code 1001’?

Roblox is one of the most popular game-creation platforms with an estimated 214 million monthly active users. The site debuted in 2006 as a way for players to construct their own virtual worlds, as well as play user-created original games, using blocks of varying shapes, colors and sizes.

Because of its audience — the majority of whom are under 18 — the platform has developed its own subcultures and lore, including Error Code 1001.

The first mention of Error Code 1001 was in a post on the Roblox Rise of Nations Wiki Fandom page in 2022. In the post, a user complained about a recurring pop-up but wasn’t able to figure out what the actual error was.

Since the post in January 2022, Error Code 1001 has evolved into being a “possible raid warning.”

In early August, TikToker @grotyneverdies2 claimed to have made a mock-up of Error Code 1001 and said it had been removed in 2013. @grotyneverdies2 admits in a comment that English is not their first language, so it takes them a second attempt to get the phrasing right.

The error code reads: “We have detected another device in your house, in case you are alone, call 911 quickly.” The pop-up implies that Roblox can sense nearby devices, so if a player thinks they’re alone while on Roblox, they might actually not be.

Why is everyone on TikTok talking about Error Code 1001?

After @grotyneverdies2 posted about it, more TikTok users within the Roblox fandom started posting their own speculation about what the error code would’ve looked like for players if it still existed. Some TikToks have differently worded variations, but the sentiment is the same to what @grotyneverdies2 wrote.

“New fear unlocked. Good job!” one commenter wrote. “You discovered the ‘1001 code fear’!”

“IM BEING SERIOUS I GOT CODE 1001 CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT I DO I CALLED THE POLICE THEY DONT EVEN BELIEVE ME ITS NOT REMOVED IDK WHAT TO DO IM SCARED,” another user commented.

Is it real?

No, Roblox does not have a pop-up advising players to call 911.

Some people claim the code was initially used in 2013, as @grotyneverdies2 said, because players who were physically close together being online at the same time would sometimes mess up the servers. But commenters debate whether that’s even true and don’t think Error Code 1001 ever existed on the platform.

A list of Roblox error codes from July also doesn’t list 1001 as one of the options. The Roblox blog also does not mention anything about Error Code 1001 as of reporting.

Since @grotyneverdies2 posted their mock-up of what the pop-up looked like, it’s essentially turned into a creepypasta for Roblox-playing TikTokers. The rumor about the error code even evolved into a scary story that one TikTok user made an animation to go along with.

Going back to the first mention of Error Code 1001 in the Rise of Nations Wiki from 2022, there is a new response as of Aug. 6 poking fun at the rumor.

“You could experience 1001 for multiple reasons, one is that your game failed to update and some of the files were corrupted. The second one is that the client (you or the app) is interfering with a server (here at Roblox HQ) signal,” the response reads. “This could mean many things, including someone nearby your house connecting on a similar account as you or on the exact same account. If your home alone during the second reason, you may be in danger. Dial 911 if this error occurs while home alone you suspect that you may be in danger.”
