What Could Be Wrong With Kendall Jenner?

On Sunday night’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kendall Jenner revealed that she’s worried about her health. “I wake up in the middle of the night and I can’t move,” Kendall says. Kris Jenner replied that she thinks Kendall “just has anxiety,” but Kendall feels that it’s a bigger problem. “Everyone says I’m fine, but I don’t feel fine,” she tells her mom.

Kendall travels often, so her circadian rhythm is put through the wringer on a regular basis. This, coupled with potential anxiety, can result in sleep paralysis, according to sleep expert Michael J. Breus, PhD. What is sleep paralysis? “You wake from sleep immobilized, unable to move your body or turn your head,” Breus wrote in the Huffington Post. “You try to make a sound, but you can’t open your mouth. You feel short of breath, with a strong feeling of pressure on your chest, weighing your body down. You feel a deep sense of dread or danger — maybe you even feel there’s a strange presence in the room.” Breus insists that sleep paralysis isn’t actually dangerous, though, nor is it a sign of a serious condition. Still, the scary sensation can be nerve wracking.

A 2013 study found that certain people are more at risk for sleep paralysis — namely, those who have experienced trauma or suffer from anxiety and depression are affected.

While sleep paralysis may not be dangerous, it’s still important for Kendall to look after her health. In December 2015, she was hospitalized for exhaustion. “I just got so tired from work and life and everything that it freaked me out at the end of this year,” she revealed on her official app. “I actually had to go to the hospital because I was so exhausted. It was definitely a wake-up call that I need to take better care of myself.” Lack of sleep can compromise health in many ways, and multiple wakings at night can be as harmful as a total lack of sleep, according to a 2014 study.

To get a better night’s sleep, Breus recommended focusing on the fundamentals of healthy sleep, such as “maintaining a regular sleep routine, avoiding stimulants (especially alcohol), exercising regularly, eating well, and avoiding eating late at night.” He also suggested focusing on mental health to address the problem at its root. “Anxiety and depression are common,” he wrote. “Seeking treatment for these conditions can help you sleep better overall and may help you avoid sleep paralysis.”

He added: “If you do experience sleep paralysis, don’t panic. Remind yourself that however frightening and disconcerting, this is a temporary and harmless condition that will soon pass. Understanding what’s happening to you physiologically can help you avoid the worst of the fear associated with this scary sleep phenomenon.”
